Electroplating
October 30, 2018
Electroplating is the process of coating the surface of an object with a thin layer of metal by submerging the object in a solution of dissolved metal ions and running an electric current through the solution in such a way that the ions are attracted to the object being plated. While the process was invented in 1805 it didn’t reach true industrial scale until the 1850s, with the advent of copper plating printing press plates. Electroplating is used in many processes from the industrial manufacture of automobiles and computers to smaller scale art, jewelry and coins or even the massive gold plated dome of the Cathedral of Christ in Moscow, the tallest Orthodox church in the world. We’ve been experimenting with the process in the shop with some success and have the first few items available now in the shop and on our Etsy page. Come down and check out the copper plated Bobcat skull ($79) Domestic Chicken skull ($49) or the articulated Javan Giant Frog skeleton ($89) or head on over and check them out in the Etsy store: https://www.etsy.com/shop/BoneGardenOddities #oddities#electroplating#copperplate#curiosities#curios#skull#skeleton#frog#bobcat#chicken#ashlandoregon
